Produsage

Content and Produsage

In this weeks class we discussed a term I was previously unfamiliar with known as ‘Produsage’. An interesting and relatively new development in the online world. Produsage refers to online activity and means it is no longer organizations and professionals that are the producers of content, it is now the online users of a certain project that collaberate to form something bigger.

In this week’s class we discussed a term I was previously unfamiliar with known as ‘Produsage’. An interesting and relatively new development in the online world. Produsage refers to online activity and means it is no longer organizations and professionals that are the producers of content, it is now the online users of a certain project that collaborate to form something bigger.

We visited an example of this in class, Second Life’s oldest landmark. The area is a sort of nature reserve. Created by users of second life originally, the owners of have now taken over. We discussed if there was any worth in an online environment like this. If you look at it on a surface level, it would be easy to say no, but what about people with disabilities who could not experience this type of place in the real world. In that regard

Take for example, this blog. Ok, the follower count may be a little light and for argument sake, we may have to imagine the comment section was a little fuller, but if it were, the engagement of users with the blog is at the heart of the term produsage. The aim is to engage the users as producers to make something grow.

Reflecting on this, I realised I had previously engaged in produsage. In my teenage years, I would upload videos of competitive online gaming to a youtube channel. Other members with an interest would like and comment on videos, unwittingly I was the producer and other members of youtube were involved in produsage. Unfortunately, streaming online gaming was not a viable career in those days, maybe I missed my calling!!

Another example I can draw from my online presence is social media. The interaction between users on each others pages is a form of produsage. An interesting development is the industry of ‘influencers’. An influencers career is entirely dependant on the amount of interest their social media can generate. The more followers and engagement they have on their pages, the more opportunities they will encounter. Influencers are paid by brands to promote their products on their page.

The class has opened my eyes up to produsage, until now I was blissfully unaware of the effect of my online activity, or how to harvest the power of online communities.
